Internet Service Provider charges for Extra Modem?

David Caruso asked:

Well, I need a new Cable Modem to hook up to our Cable so I can play my Xbox 360 Live without having to run a 30 foot cord through the basement or having to buy a 100$ wireless adapter, so now, I need to buy a Cable Modem. I asked my Internet Service provider, who already has provided us one, but it is in use for 2 Routers, one wireless, and one wired. So I cannot move it. I asked if I could pay them for an Extra Modem, and they said they charge 40 or 50 dollars a MONTH just to use the Extra Modem. Is this a complete rip off? Where else could I get the Cable Modem?
Wow, did you even read the Question.
RAM OR PROCESSOR?
Were dealing with NETWORK supplies.
Domain name

And my Cable system, about it. I already have the cable in back of my TV which I get the Channels from, next to my TV I have the Xbox 360. I don’t need to run a 30 foot cable from the router on the other side of the basement to the Modem, since you hook the modem up to the Cable which is used for the TV. I just need to find a Cable Modem, I don’t need your help with a router, cables, or anything else.
Desert, I already have the Cable line going in back of my TV. All I need to do is unplug it from the back of the TV, and plug into my Cable Modem. If I need to, I can even use a Splitter to connect to both the TV and the Modem.
Oh..
So I’d need to be charged for having another Modem in the house?
What would happen if I just plugged the Cable Modem from another store into the Cable, would it work? Would I still be charged?

If your cable service is the same as mine, getting a second modem would still require you to run that 30 foot cord through the basement because unlike standard phone networks, where you connect the modem to an existing phone socket, a cable modem is connected directly to cable system.

It sounds like they are going to charge you for a second account, maybe a second line too, as there’s not much more they can do.

Is there any way you can run the wire outside your home and into the basement? You might have to go with the wireless adapter option. But then, make sure you can return the unit in case the signal doesn’t reach your location in the basement.
